Christina “Christy” Sue Dormady

December 31, 1942 – October 1, 2026

Christina “Christy” Sue Dormady, a loving, resilient, creative woman, passed peacefully on October 1, 2026, surrounded by family. Christy was born on December 31, 1942, in Indianapolis, to Oscar and Dora Havens. She was known for her dedication to her family and her students. She had a heart full of empathy that touched everyone she met.

Christy’s passion for education led her to dedicate much of her life to teaching. She was first and foremost an educator at heart, working as a special educator with a focus on reading. She retired in 2004 from the Indianapolis Public School System, but her love for teaching remained a passion, and she returned to the classroom in California, where she moved to be closer to her family. Christy was a pillar of support for her family and was deeply involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She held a special love for Lake Wawasee, a place she cherished deeply. She was an avid sewer and reader, and she held a particular fondness for British mysteries. She was also an ardent fan of IU athletics, especially basketball. She was a member of the Cicero United Methodist Church. In her younger years, Christy nurtured a beautiful garden that was the envy of her neighbors. Even in retirement, she continued to cultivate her creativity through crafting.

Christy is survived by her children, Deborah Dormady (Beth Staropoli), Todd (Alicia) Dormady; her grandchildren, Chris (Crystal) Dormady, Austin Dormady, Aden Dormady, Cole Dormady, Sydney Dormady; her great-grandchildren, Libby Dormady and Ethan Dormady; and her brother, David (Kathy) Havens. Christy was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Dora Havens, and her brother, Stephen Havens.

Through every stage of her life, in Cicero and California, Christy remained a beacon of love, resilience, and dedication. Her zest for life was contagious, and she had an innate ability to make those around her feel valued and loved. Christy’s legacy will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.

Christy’s wishes were to have a simple cremation. Her care and services have been entrusted to Hartley-Dunnichay Funeral Homes in Cicero.

Please join us in celebrating her life by sharing your most cherished memories of Christy. We encourage you to upload photos and leave your thoughts on the memorial page as a way to honor her memory.
