Carmel overwhelmed Noblesville 64-36 in an all-county boys basketball game Friday at The Mill.
It was a battle in the first quarter. The Class 4A No. 2 Greyhounds got the first basket, a 3-pointer from Connor Gioia, and that was answered by a 3 from the Millers’ EJ Smith. Luke Almodovar later hit a triple for Noblesville, and a layin by Noah Harris made the score 10-7 in favor of the Millers.
But the ‘Hounds took over after that, going on a 22-3 run that stretched all the way into the third quarter. Baskets by Gioia, Brian Waddell and Peter Suder ended the first period, and Carmel held a 13-10 lead.
The Greyhounds dominated the second period, outscoring Noblesville 13-3 to take a 26-13 lead into halftime. Suder scored five points in that quarter and Waddell had four.
Waddell then took over in the third period, scoring 10 points every way possible. The senior hit two 3s, made a layin and put down his second dunk of the night. At the end of the quarter, Carmel led 41-23.
In the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds poured in another 23 points. Wil Leary scored eight of them, including back-to-back 3-pointers. Waddell scored another five, with another dunk.
Waddell finished the game with 21 points, followed by Suder with 13 and Leary with 10. Waddell collected seven rebounds, while Suder had six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Gioia dished out five assists.
Aaron Fine scored eight points for the Millers. He had five in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with his second 3-pointer of the night. David Lloyd also had two 3s in the second half. Smith scored seven points and Preston Roberts led the Noblesville rebounds with four.
Carmel is 4-0 and plays a Metropolitan Conference game next Friday at North Central. The Millers are 2-2 and are back in action tonight at The Mill, hosting Anderson.
