The boys swimming sectional finals took place on Saturday at various sites across Indiana, and Hamilton County’s teams once again had solid performances.
At Noblesville, Carmel won the team championship with 545 points and qualified 19 swims to Friday’s state preliminaries at the IU Natatorium. The Greyhounds won nine events and tied for first in two others in winning its 13th straight sectional title and 32nd overall.
Jacob Mitchell was a double winner in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Wyatt Davis finished first in the individual medley and backstroke. Jota Iwase won the 100 free.
Alec DeLong took first place in the 100 free and tied for first in the 50 free. Ryan Malicki tied for first in the breaststroke. Carmel also swept all three relays.
In addition to the wins, eight other Greyhounds qualified for state after beating the state cut time in their respective events. Augustus Rothrock made the cut in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Andrew Rafalko and Iwase both got cuts in the IM.
Griffin Hadley qualified in the 100 free and backstroke by time, and Rafalko and Patrick Cavanaugh both made the cut in the breaststroke. John Curcio placed third in the diving event and advanced to Tuesday’s regional at Fishers.
Westfield finished second as a team with 382.5 points. Cameron Clayton tied with Malicki for first place in the breaststroke, qualifying him for state. Ben Hobson placed fourth in the diving, earning him a spot at the regional.
Noblesville took third place with 306.5 points. Jack Wolfred qualified for state in two events: He tied with DeLong for first place in the 50 free and also made a state cut in the 100 free. In addition several times by the Millers, Shamrocks and Greyhounds are close enough to receive callbacks, which means they are fast enough to fill a field of 32 in an event once all the winners and cut times are placed.
Hamilton Heights’ Jared Holder qualified for state once again in two events. Holder made state cut times in the 100 free and the backstroke.
Guerin Catholic diver Dane Leonard finished ninth in that event, giving the Golden Eagles their highest place at the sectional.
