The Carmel girls swim team is halfway to extending its state championship record.

The Greyhounds had a dominating day at the Noblesville sectional finals last Saturday, winning 11 of 12 events. More importantly, Carmel qualified 24 of its 27 swims on to this Friday’s state prelims at the IU Natatorium in downtown Indianapolis. The ‘Hounds have won a state-leading 41 sectional trophies, including the last 40 in a row.

All 10 of the Greyhounds’ swimming victories were under the state cut time, which guarantees an automatic spot at state. Lynsey Bowen won the 200 and 500 freestyles, with Molly Sweeney claiming the individual medley and breaststroke events. Alex Shackell was first in the butterfly and backstroke.

Freshman Faith Gorey won the 50 free, while Grace Dougherty was first in the 100 free. Carmel also won the medley relay (Dougherty, Sweeney, Shackell and Lillian Clark) and the 400 free relay (Alexandra Ward, Sophia Floyd, Kayla Barr and Bowen).

The Greyhounds also had a great day on the diving board, with Melaina Munson winning the event, Helena Gibson placing second and Eeva-Liisa Gibson taking fourth. All three advance to Tuesday’s diving regional at Fort Wayne South Side.

State cut qualifiers for Carmel are Ward and Alyssa Street in both the 200 and 500 freestyles, Lucy Enoch and Barr in the IM, Madelyn Lathrop in the 50 free, Gorey in the butterfly, Floyd and Addyson Czarnecki in the 100 free, Dougherty and Barr in the backstroke and Enoch and Czarnecki in the breaststroke.  Priscilla Smith finished 0.01 seconds off the state cut in the 50 free but is very likely to get a callback in the event once the results from around the state are compiled. Brooke Cummings may get a callback in the butterfly as well.

Noblesville finished second as a team with 417 points. The Millers had one victory: Ellie Hayward, Julia Santerre, Mia Field and Maya McDonald won the 200 free relay. Noblesville also qualified its two other relays, with Haddie Vohs, McDonald, Emily Knott and Exley Tricker making the cut in the medley relay, and Vohs, Knott, Hayward and Tricker getting a cut time in the 400 free relay.

Vohs earned state cuts in the 200 free and butterfly, with McDonald a close second in the breaststroke, well under the cut time. Eryn McMahon placed third in diving and will advance to the regional.

Westfield took third as a team with 359 points. Kate Cassidy qualified for state with a cut time in the 500 free.
