41 county wrestlers qualify for semi-state contest

Hamilton County had a solid day at the North Montgomery regional last Saturday, as 27 county wrestlers finished in the top four of their respective weight classes and qualified for this Saturday’s New Castle semi-state.

Hamilton Southeastern was the top local team, placing second with 120.5 points. Zionsville won the team regional with 135 points, the Eagles had nine semi-state qualifiers, two champions and five more runner-up finishers.

The Royals had three champions. Nick Anderson won at 126 pounds, beating Westfield’s Carter Niccum in the final with a 22-5 technical fall. Zach Lang triumphed at 157 pounds by pinning Zionsville’ Blake Wahl in the third period; he won all three of his matches by fall. Nate Ingalls was the winner at 285 pounds; he beat Zionsville’s Dace McNeill in a 7-5 decision for the championship. Landon Hicks reached the final at 175 pounds.

Westfield placed third with 91.5 points but had the most semi-state qualifiers out of the county with nine. The Shamrocks had one champion: Keegan Carson at 106 pounds. He beat Carmel’s Carlo Federici in an overtime 6-4 decision. Niccum and Chase Camire (at 132) were runners-up.

Carmel finished a close fourth, scoring 89 points. The Greyhounds advanced six wrestlers to semi-state and had one champion. Caleb Mattingly took the 132-pound title by pinning Camire in 1 minute, 59 seconds. Federici and Tamir Halevi (at 113) finished second.

Fishers was the fifth-place team. The Tigers scored 78.5 points but had the most county champions with three. Chayce Yant claimed the 120-pound title with a 17-3 major decision win over Zionsville’s Tommy Frazier.

Teyon Leonard was next, winning at 138 pounds in a 9-3 decision over Southmont’s Maddox Cade. Xavier Smith won the 165-pound championship with a 9-1 major decision over Rossville’s Jacob Cole. Will Hruskoci placed third at 113 and advances to semi-state along with the three Fishers champions.

Over at Pendleton Heights, 14 county wrestlers advanced to the New Castle semi-state after placing in the top four in their respective weight classes at that regional site last Saturday.

Hamilton Heights was the top team finisher, placing third with 93.5 points. The Huskies qualified six for the semi-state and had one champion: Carson Fettig at 150 pounds. Fettig beat Bishop Chatard’s Daniel Adams in the final by a 5-2 decision. Heights had two runners-up, Isaac Kuhn at 132 pounds and Michael Cain at 160. Kendall Moe placed third at 106 pounds, she is the first county girl to advance to the boys semi-state.

Noblesville placed a close fourth as a team, scoring 92.5 points. The Millers had the most county semi-state qualifiers with seven and also had one champion. Aidan Kincaide edged out Cain in the 157-pound match by a 2-1 decision. Carter Richardson was the 165-pound runner-up.

Guerin Catholic’s Peter Nguyen finished as runner-up at 126 pounds, advancing to semi-state.

Cathedral won the team championship, well outdistancing runner-up Chatard by the score of 215.5-101.5. The Irish had 13 semi-state qualifiers, including seven champions.
