The Carmel girls track and field team defended its team championship at the Hoosier State Relays Large School meet.
The Greyhounds finished comfortably ahead of Bloomington South at the meet, which took place Saturday, March 28 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Carmel totaled 63.5 points to Bloomington South’s 50, thanks to its strong showing in the relay races.
The Hounds won the 4×800 relay in a new meet record time of 9 minutes, 1.92 seconds. Annabel Pollert, Sadie Foley, Kaitlyn Oshimura and Larkin Taylor were the runners in that event. Taylor, Oshimura and Foley later joined Gabriela Grande Rosas to place second in the distance medley relay; their time of 11:56.95 was under the old meet record.
Carmel also placed third in the 4×400 relay and sixth in the 4×200 relay. Pollert placed second in the 3200 run.
Westfield tied for fifth place by scoring 26 points. Ella Jenkins picked an event victory for the Shamrocks, winning the pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 3 inches. Gracie Czubik helped out with a fifth-place finish in the high jump.
Hamilton Southeastern scored 25.5 points to place seventh as a team. The Royals earned a victory in the 4×400 relay; with Ava Kashani, Chloe Senefeld, Kaleah McCarter and Anissa Lammie clocking in with a time of 3:56.21.
Noblesville scored four points, tying for 32nd. Ainsley Meinerding finished seventh in the 60 dash and Nyla Young placed seventh in the shot put.
Boys meet
Two county teams reached the top 10 and Noblesville distance star Banner Barnes picked up an event win in the boys’ competition.
Carmel tied fourth as a team, scoring 30 points. Alim Broadnax took third in the long jump. His best jump was 22 feet, 6.5 inches. Lucas Bartlett finished third in the 3200 run.
The Millers were seventh as a team with 26 points. Barnes led the way with his 3200 victory, clocking in at 9:08.29. He also ran on Noblesville’s runner-up distance medley relay, joining Isaiah Vohs, Jack Rush and Cooper Click.
Westfield scored 18 points to take 12th place. The 4×800 relay team of Donovan Ledford, Luke Moulder, Caleb Haney and Carson Ackley finished fourth.
Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern both scored 12 points and tied for 16th place. The Tigers’ Konrad Haynes cleared 6 feet, 8 inches to place second in the high jump. Liam Powers finished fourth in the 3200 run for the Royals.
