Carmel boys hold off Giants in OT

The Carmel boys basketball team kept its unbeaten record in the Metropolitan Conference intact on Friday, holding off Ben Davis in overtime 43-42 at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
The Greyhounds, ranked No. 2 in the IBCA one-class poll and No. 5 in the Associated Press Class 4A ratings, jumped out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter. The Giants, No. 7 in the AP 4A rankings and No. 9 in the IBCA list, came back to within 18-9 at halftime, then took the lead in the third quarter, going up 26-24 by the end of the period.
Ben Davis led 34-30 with 39 seconds left, but the ‘Hounds were able to tie it up at 35-35 at the end of regulation. Spencer White made two free throws with seven seconds left to send the game to overtime. Carmel clinched the game in the extra period when Josh Whack hit a foul shot, again with seven seconds to go.
Peter Suder led the Greyhounds with 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Sam Orme had nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Whack scored eight points.
Carmel is 5-0 in MIC play and 12-4 overall. The ‘Hounds host Fort Wayne Snider tonight.
