(Above left) State Rep. Donna Schaibley (right) welcomes Carmel artist Madhuchhanda Mandal to the Statehouse for the 2020 Hoosier Women Artists Exhibition Reception on Wednesday. Mandal’s acrylic painting, “Dhobi Ghaat,” (At the Wash Basin) is inspired by the under appreciation of women in rural India who dedicate their lives to loving and taking care of their family, asking for little in return.

(Above center) Carmel native Patricia McGriffin showcases her work. McGriffin’s motivation for the piece stemmed from previous photographs of the orchids at the state museum. She chose the white orchid because it reminded her of her daughter. The piece, “White Orchid,” will hang at the governor’s residence.

(Above right) Carmel resident Lacy Pearson displays her mixed media ink painting at the reception. Pearson’s inspiration for the artwork came from a story about women being arrested for lighting small fires as a peaceful demonstration during the women’s suffrage movement. Her piece, “Burning Furiously Beautiful,” will hang in State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell’s office.
