Dear Editor:
As president of Schaefer Technologies, I see every day how Indiana’s life sciences sector fuels innovation and economic growth across our state. We manufacture specialized capsule-filling equipment that helps researchers and scientists turn groundbreaking therapies into real treatments for patients.
Recent breakthroughs in pancreatic cancer treatment, including a new drug shown to double survival rates in clinical trials, show us what is possible when we invest in drug research and the people behind it. These breakthroughs don’t happen by accident. They are the result of the hard work and dedication from scientists, manufacturers and the broader life sciences workforce that powers this $100 billion industry in our state.
Policymakers in Washington should focus on strengthening the life sciences ecosystem. Proposals that impose price controls risk would undermine innovation, discourage investment, and shift future discoveries overseas.
If we want the next major breakthrough to happen here in Indiana, our federal lawmakers must support policies that protect and grow our life sciences sector rather than weaken it.
