It came down to the last race, but the Hamilton Southeastern boys track & field team won the Hamilton County meet on Thursday.

The host Royals triumphed by one point, edging out Westfield 120.5 to 119.5. Southeastern clinched the meet by winning the 4×400 relay; the Royals’ team of Michael Mott, Kallen Hoeft, Omar Elsayed and Christian Ortiz ran away with the race, clocking in at 3 minutes, 22.81 seconds.

“It feels really good, because to this point, we just hadn’t quite put it all together, and we didn’t even have all of our pieces this evening,” said HSE coach Garrett Lawton. “But I have a feeling the guys are going to ride this high into sectional and beyond.”

The relay win was one of six victories for the Royals. Ortiz was a double winner; he set a new meet record of 47.93 seconds in the 400 dash. Sam Long swept the hurdles events, winning the 110 race in 15.09 seconds and the 300 race in 38.89 seconds. Long was awarded the high-point scoring trophy at the end of the meet.
