Boys tennis sectionals begin

Boys tennis sectionals began on Wednesday with semi-final matches at Carmel’s Todd Witsken Tennis Center and the Hamilton Southeastern courts.
The No. 1-ranked and defending state champion Greyhounds easily advanced to this afternoon’s championship by beating University 5-0. Carmel won all five matches 6-0, 6-0.
The ‘Hounds will face No. 10 Guerin Catholic for the title; the Golden Eagles beat Westfield 4-1. Guerin won all of its matches in straight sets.
“Across the board, I thought we played very, very well,” said GC coach Joe Lustig. “I was particularly pleased with a couple of positions. Michael Aikman at No. 3 singles would’ve lost a match like that earlier in the season and he managed to play extremely well.”
Parker Kalis won at No. 1 singles for the Shamrocks, which qualifies him for the individual singles tournament. Play will begin in that next week.
Carmel and Guerin Catholic will play for the championship at 4:15 p.m. today.
At Southeastern, No. 8 Fishers edged the No. 23 host Royals 3-2 to advance to today’s championship there. The Tigers won all three singles matches, while Southeastern won both doubles matches. That includes No. 1 doubles Mark Slaninka and Andrew Myers, who move to the individual doubles tournament.
Fishers will play Noblesville, a 4-1 winner over Hamilton Heights. The Millers won all of their matches in straight sets. Hudson Hochstedler got the Huskies’ lone win, at No. 2 singles.
The championship at HSE starts at 4:30 p.m.
