Boys basketball roundup: Greyhounds roar back for first win

Carmel picked up its first win of the season Saturday at the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic in Cincinnati, beating Cincinnati Elder 39-33.
It was a back-and-forth game, with the defending Class 4A state champion Greyhounds leading 14-3 after the first quarter. Elder cut into that lead slightly by halftime, but Carmel still led 21-12 at the break. Elder then held down the Greyhounds’ offense in the third period to take a 24-23 lead, but Carmel roared back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Elder 16-9.
Sam Orme scored 17 points for the ‘Hounds, including four 3-pointers. Josh Whack added eight points, with six of them coming in the fourth period. Orme, Spencer White and Charlie Williams each collected three rebounds.
Carmel is 1-1 and opens Metropolitan Conference play Friday at Lawrence Central.

Millers dominate Columbus East

Noblesville powered its way to a first win of the season Saturday night, winning on the road at Columbus East 90-51.
The Millers outscored the Olympians in each of the four quarters. Noblesville led 19-11 after the first period and 40-27 at halftime, then exploded for 26 points in the third period. Aaron Fine scored seven points in both the second and third quarters, while Luke Wilson hit two 3-pointers in the fourth period.
The Millers put together a balanced scoring effort. Fine led with 22 points, with Cameron Karns adding 14 points. Cooper Bean scored 13 and Luke Almodovar added 10.
Noblesville is 1-1 and opens Hoosier Crossroads Conference play Friday at Fishers.

‘Blazers cruise to season-opening win

University cruised to a season-opening win on Saturday, beating Shortridge 76-34.
The Trailblazers were in control from the beginning, leading 25-6 after the first quarter. Senior Larry Pierce scored nine points in that period, then added another seven points in the second quarter. University totaled 24 points in that period, giving the ‘Blazers a 49-15 lead at halftime. University continued to roll in the third quarter, outscoring Shortridge 14-3.
“For our first game, all the coaches preached effort, energy, and togetherness,” said Trailblazers coach Brandon Lafferman. The coach said he was “really happy with all three of these things tonight” and thought his team’s energy in the first three minutes of the game “really set the tone for the entire contest.”
Pierce finished the game with 20 points. Sophomore Sabien Cain added 15 points, while another sophomore Robert Russell added nine points. Eleven players took to the floor for University, and 11 of them scored at least one point.
The Trailblazers host Shenandoah on Friday.

Golden Eagles beat Ritter, 70-62

Guerin Catholic went back on the road Saturday night and came home with a 70-62 victory over Cardinal Ritter.
The Golden Eagles scored 20 points in the first quarter, with Aden Cannon getting seven of those points. Will Grisson scored at least four points in each period, including nine in the fourth quarter on his way to a team-leading 23 points. Kamea Chandler added 12 points and Lucas Parker scored 11.
Guerin Catholic is 1-1 for the season. The Golden Eagles’ next game is next Saturday, Dec. 4, when they host Hamilton Heights.

‘Hawks fall to Mounties

Sheridan dropped its season opener on Saturday, falling to Southmont 73-20 at Larry Hobbs Hall.
The Mounties outscored the Blackhawks in each quarter, leading 20-5 after the first period and 36-15 at halftime. Southmont only allowed Sheridan five points in the second half.
Ethan Moistner made four 3-pointers – two each in the second and third periods – on his way to a team-leading 14 points.
The Blackhawks play at Clinton Prairie on Friday to begin Hoosier Heartland Conference play.
