Blazers hold off Owensboro Catholic

The University baseball team began play in Panama City Beach, Fla. this week with a 10-8 win over Owensboro (Ky.) Catholic.

The Trailblazers started with three runs in the first inning. Oliver Kingery batted in Ryan Castetter, Beckett Suh scored on David Gasper’s RBI groundout, then Kingery got home after Finn Steiner reached on error.

University put up four more runs in the second inning. Suh singled in Ethan Cutsinger for the first run; he and Cooper Cammack later scored on Gasper’s left field single. Kingery scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-0.

The Aces got on the board in the top of the third inning with four runs, then scored another run in the fourth, cutting the Blazers’ lead to 7-5. University added three runs in the fifth inning: Cammack singled in Cutsinger, then later scored after Suh hit an inside-the-park home run.

Owensboro Catholic scored three runs in the sixth inning and drew a one-out walk in the seventh. But Suh turned a double play to end the game.

Suh and Kingery both had two hits, with Gasper totaling three RBIs. Caleb Stocker threw three strikeouts in three innings.

University is 4-2 for the season. The Trailblazers started their season early with four games between  March 19 and March 21 as part of the IHSAA’s Legacy Program. University went 2-2 in games at Memphis, beating David Crockett and First Assembly Christian, while falling to The Bennett School and Knights Academy.

University will continue its Florida trip this week, starting with a game against East Forsyth (Ga.) at 12:30 p.m. today.
