Blazers, Golden Eagles win baseball regionals

The University and Guerin Catholic baseball teams won regional championships on Saturday, June 6 at Mooresville.

The Class 2A Trailblazers went first and took care of Greencastle 13-5. The Tiger Cubs scored a run in the top of the first inning, but University answered back immediately with six runs in the bottom of the first.

Beckett Suh batted in the first run, smashing a double to bring in Ryan Castetter. The Blazers loaded the bases, then Suh scored when Finn Steiner was hit by a pitch. Philip Jacobs doubled in Braxton Sparks and David Gasper, then Castetter singled Steiner and Jacobs home.

Greencastle scored three runs in the third inning to cut University’s lead to 6-4. But the Trailblazers pulled away again, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning.

Jacobs and Quinn Green both scored with one out. Suh hit a two-RBI single to bring in Ethan Cutsinger and Castetter, Cooper Cammack blasted a triple that sent Oliver Kingery and Suh home, and Gasper batted in Cammack.

The Tiger Cubs scored one more run in the sixth inning.

Castetter, Kingery and Suh all had two hits. Cooper Cammack pitched three innings, striking out three.

University is 21-10 and plays Evansville Mater Dei in the first game of the 2A south semi-state on Saturday, June 13 at Lawrence Central. Heritage Christian plays Sullivan in the second game, with the times to be announced.

Guerin rallies

Class 3A Guerin Catholic rallied late to beat Northview 4-1.

The Knights scored their run in the third inning. The Golden Eagles took the lead in the fifth inning when Ian Taylor singled in Brody Cain and Nolan Ratcliff. In the sixth inning, Ratcliff hit a two-RBI single, sending Karson Smith and Liam Zorger home.

Ben Canada hit a double. Luke Gremelspacher pitched 3.1 innings for the win, striking out eight.

Guerin Catholic is 25-3-1. The Golden Eagles play Providence in the first game of the 3A south semi-state on Saturday, June 13 at Jasper’s Ruxer Field. Cathedral and Gibson Southern follow in the other semifinal, with the times to be announced.
