Baseball roundup: Noblesville start season with dramatic win, Southeastern & Carmel keep Chesteron at bay, Fishers takes down Homestead, Westfield beats North Central

The Noblesville baseball team won its first game of the season Monday in dramatic fashion.

The Millers were playing at Cincinnati St. Xavier, with the score tied at 4-4 after the regulation seven innings. Noblesville blasted through the top of the eighth with four runs to clinch an 11-7 victory.

With one out in the eighth, Jacob Baker drew a bases-loaded walk to score McCoy Fulk; that proved to be the go-ahead run. Nolan Decker scored on a wild pitch, which also moved Aiden Ramsey to third base. Ramsey scored on Joe Glander’s sacrifice fly, then Baker got home on an error. The Millers took care of St. Xavier three up, three down in the bottom of the inning to get the win.

Noblesville trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, but a two-out double from Josh Peek drove in Tanner Miller to tie the game.

The Millers scored two runs in the first two innings. In the first, Trevor Corbett scored when Decker reached on error, then Ramsey’s left field hit brought in Nash Watson. St. Xavier got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Noblesville scored another two in the second inning. Corbett singled in Brady Bishop, then later stole home.

Ramsey hit a home run in the third inning, then Fulk singled Corbett home in the fourth.

Corbett, Aiden Reynolds, Fulk and Ramsey all had two hits, with Corbett cracking a triple. Lucas Stephan got the win, tossing four strikeouts. Decker pitched four and a third innings of relief, striking out nine.

Noblesville plays at the Warrior Classic on Thursday, taking on Blackman (Tenn.)

Hamilton Southeastern held off Chesterton on Monday 6-5 to win its season opener.

The Trojans scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Tyler Noel got a run back for the Royals in the bottom of the first, with a center field single to score Maddux Bach.

Southeastern put up three runs in the second inning, thanks to a bases-clearing double by Nolan Colbert. His big hit scored Drew LaFleur (who hit a triple), Kam Seitz and Bach. Michael Hoog then blasted a triple in the fourth inning to bring in Colbert and Noel.

Colbert and Noel both finished with two hits. Josh Lesniewski threw four innings for the win.

The Royals play at the Warrior Classic on Friday, taking on Henry County and Perkins.

Carmel also played Chesterton early this week, getting a 5-0 win Tuesday at Hartman Field.

Jake Stein scored the first run in the first inning, after Chase Sabo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Hunter Snow cracked a home run in the second inning, which also sent Stein home. James Charland scored later when Carson Mace was hit by a pitch. Parker Heaney singled in Gabe Mathison in the fourth inning.

Stein finished with two hits, including a triple. Theo Nagy pitched three innings for the win, tossing five strikeouts.

Carmel hosts Brebeuf Jesuit this evening.

Fishers began its season with a 7-3 win over Homestead Monday at Taylor University.

The Tigers got on the board in the third inning when Jase Ruggles scored on a wild pitch. The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Fishers struck back in the fourth when Ruggles hit a home run. Ben Hammond also scored; he led off the inning with a single.

Homestead again tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers finally got ahead for good with three runs in the fifth. Hammond singled in Huston Dunn and Jack Brown, then Brady Carman scored on an error. Dunn scored in the seventh inning after Evan Doran hit a sacrifice fly.

Hammond and Gavin Kuzniewski each had two hits. Owen Sanders threw five strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings for the win.

Fishers will also play at the Warrior Classic, taking on Christian Academy of Knoxville and Wilson Central.

Westfield took care of North Central 14-2 on Monday to open its season.

Brayden Hibler hit a first-inning sacrifice fly to send Caden Lindsey home. The Shamrocks then put up five runs in the third inning, including an RBI single from Alex Rudolph. Westfield then scored seven runs in the seventh inning, with Ian Wilson smacking a three-RBI double. Rudolph then doubled Wilson home for his second hit of the game.

Drew Law scored three runs, with Lindsey, Hibler, Wilson and Rudolph all scoring two. Owen Swinford went three and a third innings for the win, striking out five.

The Shamrocks play at Franklin Central today to begin Hoosier Crossroads Conference play.
