Baseball: ‘Rocks split HCC series with Royals

Westfield beat Hamilton Southeastern 2-1 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Friday at the Shamrocks’ field, splitting the series with the Royals.
Southeastern scored its run in the second inning. Eli Miller got home after Christian Beal reached on error. The Shamrocks tied the game in the fourth inning; Maximus Webster led off with a single, then got home on Collin Lindsey’s RBI double. Westfield got the go-ahead run in the fifth inning when Trey Dorton singled in Keaton Mahan.
Kade Robinson threw a complete game for the ‘Rocks, striking out seven and allowing only three hits. Sam Reagan went four and two-thirds innings for the Royals, tossing five strikeouts and also allowing just three hits. Reliever Ethan Lund had two strikeouts against one hit.
Westfield is 13-8 and hosts Kokomo on Monday. The Royals are 8-15 and play a makeup HCC game at noon today at Noblesville.

Fishers needed 10 innings to get past Franklin Central on Friday, with the Tigers winning 5-4 in an HCC game at the Flashes’ field. The victory gave Fishers a share of the conference championship; the Tigers are 11-1 in HCC play.
Fishers scored a run in the second inning. Dom Oliverio hit a triple, then was sent home when Curtis Kearschner hit a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers put up three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Gavin Clayton singled in Oliverio, Kearschner scored on Joe Hietpas’ sacrifice fly, and Clayton was batted in by Joey Brenczewski’s left field hit.
Franklin Central scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to get within 4-2. In the seventh inning, the Flashes hit a two-run home run, tying the game and sending it into extra innings. Fishers scored with two outs in the top of the 10th when Kearschner scored on an error. In the bottom of the tenth, Joey Wilmoth threw two strikeouts, then Huey Dunn collected the third out on a groundout.
Wilmoth threw five innings and pitched sensational, striking out 13 and allowing just four hits. Starter Gavin Kuzniewski pitched the first five innings with seven strikeouts and three hits.
The Tigers are 19-5 overall and play a doubleheader at Homestead today.

Hamilton Heights won the third-place game in the Hoosier Conference playoff on Friday, beating Benton Central 7-2 at the Huskies’ field.
The Bison scored their runs in the top of the first inning. Heights got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Nate Hulen scored on an error.
The Huskies took the lead in the third inning, scoring three runs. Sam Allen singled in Kaleb Murray, then Drew Van Oeveren hit a two-RBI line drive to score Hulen and Allen.
Heights added three more runs in the fifth inning. Allen’s center field double scored Murray, Hulen got his third run when Cooper Vondersaar reached on error, and Allen scored on Isaac Tuma’s RBI groundout.
Allen was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Dean Mason hit a double. VanOeveren pitched a complete game, striking out 11 against four hits.
The Huskies are 12-5 and play Tuesday at Kokomo.

Carmel dropped a 6-3 game at Roncalli on Friday.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the first inning when Griffin Wolf singled in Hunter Snow. Carmel added two more runs in the third; Nathan MacLaren got home on a passed ball and Daniel Cunningham hit a sacrifice fly to score Snow. The Rebels scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning.
Snow had two hits.
The Greyhounds are 12-7 and play Monday at Mount Vernon.
