The Carmel baseball team picked up a huge upset last Saturday at Penn.

The Greyhounds beat the No. 1-ranked and defending Class 4A state champions Kingsmen in both games of a doubleheader. Carmel won the first game 7-3 and the second game 9-4.

In the first game, the ‘Hounds scored a run in the first inning: Hunter Snow got home on Chase Sabo’s RBI groundout. Penn took a 2-1 lead in the second inning before Carmel tied the game in the fourth. Sabo got on base with a lead-off double and later scored on Carson Mace’s RBI groundout.

The Greyhounds got two runs in the fifth inning. JD Stein smacked a one-out triple and was batted home after Snow reached on a fielder’s choice. Snow scored later when Sabo hit a sacrifice fly.  Carmel got three more runs in the sixth inning: Snow’s right field hit drove in Parker Heaney and Mace, then Stein scored on a wild pitch.

Snow and James Charland both had two hits. Nathan Koebcke got the pitching win, with four strikeouts and one hit in four innings.

The ‘Hounds were in control early in the second game. Carmel got on the board with a two-run single from Gabe Mathison in the second inning that scored Joe Cunningham and Heaney. The Greyhounds put up five runs in the third inning: Tyler Walkey drove in Nash Skelton and Mace with a left field hit, Stein doubled Silas Neal and Walkey home, then Stein scored when Mathison reached on error.

Carmel added a fifth-inning run when Neal scored on Mathison’s sacrifice fly. Stein completed the scoring in the seventh inning, getting home on a wild pitch. He was 2-for-2 at the plate. Max Winders was the winning pitcher.

The Greyhounds are 5-0 and start the week Tuesday by hosting Hamilton Southeastern at Hartman Field. Carmel then welcomes Lawrence North on Thursday and Edwardsville (Ill.) on Friday before playing at Noblesville on Saturday.
