Indiana Swimming hosted the Age Group State meet last weekend, and the next generation of Hamilton County swimmers began the process of making their mark.
In the Girls 10 and Under category, two Carmel Swim Club swimmers won one event each. Lexie Ward triumphed in the 100 freestyle, while Lynsey Bowen was first in the 200 freestyle. Ward and Bowen teamed up with Kiarra Thomas and Savannah Irizarry to win the medley relay.
Meanwhile, Carmel’s Boys 10 and Under medley relay team of Jack Barnes, Taila Iwase, Carter Hadley and Anderson Kopp won that event.
Southeastern Swim Club’s JiHoon Jung had a great meet in the Boys 10 and Under category, with top five finishes in all of his individual events. Jung’s best place was third in the 100 butterfly. In the Girls division, Avery Witt took third in the 50 freestyle.
Noblesville Swim Club got a fourth-place finish in the Girls division from Exley Tricker, in the 50 breaststroke.
In the Girls 11-12 division, two new stars emerged after they each won an event in record-breaking fashion.
Fishers’ Meghan Christman set a new meet record in the 100 free, swimming that race in 59.29 seconds. Carmel’s Berit Berglund set a new standard in the 50 backstroke of 31.80. Berglund’s time beat a record that had been in the books since 1985.
Berglund also won the 100 and 200 backstroke swims, with Christman placing first in the 50 free. Fishers also picked up wins from Molly Robinson in the 200 breaststroke and Jo Jo Ramey in the 200 individual medley.
Southeastern swept the two Girls 11-12 relays. The team of Grace Newton, Ava Olson, Katelyn Kertin and Ashley Saple were first in the 200 free relay, while Newton, Claire Peters, Audrey Crawford and Saple won the 200 medley relay.
