Westfield Mayor Andy Cook and Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb recently joined leaders from global healthcare leader Abbott for the grand opening of the company’s new advanced manufacturing facility in Westfield.
“Abbott will be a significant part of Westfield’s future,” Cook said. “The skilled jobs and innovative, life-saving technology that will be manufactured here is exactly what Westfield wants and needs as we grow our economy. Seeing a Fortune 100 life sciences company like Abbott open its doors here is a proud moment for our city and a sign that Westfield is a great place for businesses to call home.”
“We’re proud to open our new facility in Westfield, Indiana, to meet the growing demand for MitraClip, which has been used to treat mitral valve disease in patients around the world,” said Michael Dale, senior vice president of Abbott’s structural heart business. “The established life sciences and manufacturing capability in the area is just one of the reasons we selected this community for our new Abbott site, and we’re excited to expand our operations to improve access to a therapy that is critical in helping people live longer, fuller lives.”
“Indiana’s economy continues to fire on all cylinders, and global companies like Abbott are taking notice,” Holcomb said. “Operating in a global economy, Abbott had endless options, and I am incredibly grateful they chose the Hoosier state to not only grow their business and create hundreds of careers, but also improve the lives of people around the world.”
The 20-acre campus is located along U.S. 31 in Westfield. Abbott announced plans in October 2019 to invest at least $37.6 million to establish a new medical device production site for its Structural Heart business, constructing a 120,000 square-foot facility in the city’s NorthPoint Industrial Park.
Abbott expects to add more than 450 new jobs as the new site reaches peak production in the coming years. The Westfield site supports the company’s structural heart business and will house manufacturing for Abbott’s MitraClip, a heart valve repair device that treats mitral regurgitation, or a leaky mitral valve, without the need for surgery. To date, MitraClip has been implanted in more than 100,000 patients worldwide.
