Softball: Shamrocks shut out Tri-West, Heights falls

The Westfield softball team got a nice win on Friday, beating Tri-West 5-0 in a game at Grand Park.

The contest was scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Shamrocks broke through with a run. Makayla Watson singled in Annika Lawrence, and Westfield was on the board.

The ‘Rocks got their offense going in the sixth inning with four runs. Ava Kainrath hit a solo home run, Chloe Tanner tripled in Grace Fanelli, then Grace Feltz’ right field line drive sent Tanner home. Maggie Roh sent a base hit into center field to bring in Feltz.

Roh finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Tanner had two hits. Allie Dolenc hit a fourth-inning double. Tanner pitched a complete game, tossing 11 strikeouts.

Westfield is 8-8 and hosts Lawrence North on Monday.

Hamilton Heights lost a tough game on Friday, falling at Beech Grove 4-3 in eight innings.

Both teams scored two runs in the second inning. Kassidy Schakel got the Huskies on the board with a two-run home run, also scoring Kaylee Rhoton. A two-RBI single by the Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

In the fourth inning, Rhoton led off with a single, then moved to third base on a hit from Isabel Morrow. Schakel came up next and batted Rhoton in for a second time.

Heights held a 3-2 lead until the sixth inning, when Beech Grove doubled in a run. The Hornets then hit another double in the eighth inning to score the winning run.

Schakel finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Lily Roush pitched a complete game, striking out eight.

The Huskies are 10-6 and host Lewis Cass on Tuesday to begin a Hoosier Conference East Division series.
