The Fishers baseball team needed an extra inning to get past Hamilton Southeastern 4-3 in the first game of the Mudsock series Thursday at the Royals’ Ken Seitz Field.

The score was tied at 3-3 after seven innings. The Tigers’ Jack Brown led off the top of the eighth with a triple, and was eventually sent home when Quinn Seefeldt hit a sacrifice fly for what proved to be the winning run.

Fishers scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Carson Dunn reached on error, then scored when Brown hit a single to center field. Brown stole second base, then was brought home by Gavin Clayton’s base hit, also to center field.

The Royals got one run back in the third inning after Ty Bradle batted in Maddux Bach with a single. Chugga Rosario stepped up for Southeastern in the fourth inning with a left field home run to tie the game at 2-2.

The Tigers jumped ahead in the top of the fifth inning. Gavin Kuzniewski hit a two-out double, then scored on Evan Doran’s right field hit. Fishers held the 3-2 lead until the seventh inning: Clayton Wilke scored on Kam Seitz’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Brown finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. He also threw the first six innings, striking out four. Kyle Manship pitched the last two innings, thus getting the win in relief.

Bradle and Rosario both had two hits for the Royals. Bradle also tossed six strikeouts in seven innings.

This was also a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game, and Fishers improved to 4-3 in the conference, while Southeastern is 5-2. Overall, the Tigers are 11-7 while the Royals are 10-8.

The two teams continue the Mudsock series at 6 p.m. tonight at Fishers.

Guerin Catholic picked up an all-county win on Thursday, beating Carmel 5-3 at the Golden Eagles’ field.

The Golden Eagles scored a run in the second inning, when AJ Nunley got home on a passed ball. Guerin Catholic put up three more runs in the third inning. Karson Smith and Will Fremion both hit singles, and both scored when Ian Taylor smacked a triple into left field. Taylor then scored on a passed ball, and GC led 4-0.

The Greyhounds made a comeback in the fifth inning. Drew Fouts sent a double into left field, scoring Kenny Bruntlett and Tim Haas. Fouts scored on an error later in the inning, and Carmel was within 4-3.

But the Golden Eagles added a run in the sixth inning. Cuinn Morrow got on base with a double, then later scored on an error. Morrow and Nunley both had 2-for-3 nights at the plate.

Freshman Tate Troxell got the pitching win for Guerin, with nine strikeouts in five innings against three hits. Nate Gremelspacher got the save, throwing the last five innings and not allowing a hit. Guerin Catholic has five freshmen on its roster.

“First of all, that’s a good ball club across the way,” said Golden Eagles coach Keith Nunley. “Very good team and they threw a really good arm at us tonight, Adam Buczkowski. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.

“In terms of our maturity, we don’t let them be freshmen, man. If they are going to be on the field, they got to step up and play and that’s what we expect every day from them in practice, so they performed in the game.”

Buczkowski pitched the first three innings for Carmel, striking out six. Max Winders threw the last three innings, totaling five strikeouts.

Guerin Catholic is 14-1 for the season and plays Monday at Zionsville. Carmel is 8-5 and hosts Fishers on Monday.
