University got off to a quick start Tuesday night at Cathedral but could not maintain the momentum as it dropped a 55-43 decision to the Irish.
The Blazers built a 15-8 lead with one minute left in the opening period behind six points from Payton Seay and four from Kamryn Washington. Cathedral scored the last four points of the period to cut the lead to 15-12.
University maintained a lead for most of the second quarter, leading 22-18 with 3:22 left in the half on a Kiera Bright foul shot. The Irish outscored the Blazers 10-2 for the rest of the half and took a 28-24 lead after two.
Cathedral held University to just two points over a nine-minute stretch spanning the third and fourth quarter to take control of the game.
Seay finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead University. Kelsey DuBois added nine points and nine rebounds.
University (3-2) returns to 56th Street on Friday when they travel to Class 4A No. 12 Lawrence Central. The 2-1 Bears, ranked 13th in the single class poll, will be out to avenge a 65-55 loss to the Trailblazers last season. University holds a 2-0 lead in the series that began with a 74-44 win at Lawrence Central in December 2018.
