Big fifth inning sends ‘Hawks past Hornets

Sheridan stormed ahead in the fifth inning of its Hoosier Heartland Conference game with Rossville on Thursday, and that led the Blackhawks to a 12-9 win over the visiting Hornets.
Rossville scored two runs in the first inning, but Sheridan tied the game in the second when Camden Spencer hit a home run. Jack Crail also scored. Crail batted in Sebastian Salazar for a third inning run, after which Zach Bales scored on an error. In the fourth inning, Salazar smacked a triple to send Cole Macintosh home.
The Hornets tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but the ‘Hawks took over from there, putting up seven runs. Silas DeVaney got home when Ty Macy drew a bases-loaded walk, Clinton Slopsema scored on Evan Grinstead’s RBI fielder’s choice, then Spencer got home on Macintosh’s sacrifice hit.
Grinstead scored when Bales was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Dayne Voege got home on a wild pitch, then DeVaney cracked a two run single to score Salazar and Nathan Brown, who came in to run for Bales.
Salazar, DeVaney and Crail all finished with two hits. Voege pitched four innings for the win, with Salazar getting the save.
Sheridan is 9-11 for the season.
