Softball: Izzy Kemp’s no-hitter sends GC past Brebeuf

Izzy Kemp had an almost-perfect day during the Guerin Catholic softball team’s Circle City Conference game Wednesday at Brebeuf Jesuit.
Kemp pitched a no-hitter against the Braves, and the Golden Eagles were solid at the plate as well, leading to an 8-0 victory. Kemp only allowed one runner on base, that was in the first inning on a dropped third strike.
Kemp struck out nearly everyone she faced, totaling 20 strikeouts in the game. Guerin Catholic also got one groundout each in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in six of the seven innings. Izzy Kemp got GC on the board in the first inning when she doubled in Lucy Kemp. Lucy Kemp then batted in Olivia Spomer for a second-inning run, then Kirsten Mascari sent Anna Mauch home with a third-inning RBI; Mauch led off the inning with a double.
In the fourth inning, Spomer started things with a home run, then Mauch doubled in Bussick. Lillian Everts scored a fifth-inning run on an error. Natalie Eiler led off the seventh with a homer, then Spomer scored on Lucy Kemp’s sacrifice fly.
Mauch finished the game with three hits, including two doubles. Izzy Kemp also hit two doubles.
Guerin Catholic is 2-1 in conference play and 5-3 overall.

Hamilton Southeastern cruised to a 15-9 win Wednesday at Kokomo.
The Royals scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Lani Wyrick got the first run after Jenna Chase reached on error, then Taylor Larson scored on Payton Fox’s RBI groundout.
The Wildkats scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead, but Southeastern put up five runs in the top of the third, and stayed on top from that point forward. Reece Garland singled in Maddie Bucher, then Fox scored when Wyrick drew a bases-loaded walk. Larson then blasted a single to score Paige Gould, after which Garland and Wyrick got home on an error.
In the fourth inning, Bucher scored on Morgan Hicks’ RBI groundout, then Fox got home when Alex Kiemeyer hit a sacrifice fly. Fox had gotten on base with a double. Sage Ladig then cracked a three-run home run in the fifth, also scoring Larson and Chase.
Garland opened the sixth inning with a solo homer, then in the seventh inning, Stephanie Penny singled in Chase and Halle Guiden scored on Garland’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Ladig pitched six innings, striking out eight.
The Royals are 7-8 and play Friday at Pendleton Heights.

Hamilton Heights dropped a 6-3 Hoosier Conference East Division game Wednesday at Northwestern.
The Huskies scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Kaylee Rhoton singled in Jessa Steffen for the first run, Lily Roush scored on a passed ball, then Kassidy Schakel’s single sent Isabella Neiling home. The Tigers put up four runs in the bottom of the first and held the lead from there.
Rhoton and Schakel both had two hits. Alayna Baber pitched the complete game.
Heights is 2-4 in division play and 3-8 overall. The Huskies host Pike this afternoon.

Carmel dropped a tough game at Zionsville on Tuesday, falling 4-3 in eight innings.
The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Greyhounds tied the game in the top of the sixth, when Elsa Morrison doubled in Kylie Cunningham. Carmel then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh when Sophie Esposito cracked a center field double to send Paxton Law home.
Zionsville tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double. In the eighth inning, the Greyhounds went up 3-2. Morrison smashed a double, then Hope McDonald batted her in. But the Eagles would score two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Morrison was 3-3 at the plate. Maddie Stacy pitched a complete game.
Carmel is 6-8 and plays Friday at Guerin Catholic.

Noblesville dropped a 5-3 game at Cathedral on Wednesday.
The Millers scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Bella Schatko got the first run on a wild pitch, then Macy Duvall and Gabby Fowler both scored when Lauren DeRolf reached on error. The Irish got a run back in the bottom of the first, tied the game in the fourth inning, and scored two in the sixth for the lead.
Claire Cullen pitched two innings, striking out four.
Noblesville is 7-6 and plays this afternoon at Pendleton Heights.
