Baseball: Tigers win 3rd straight, Salazar shines for ‘Hawks

The Fishers baseball team won its third straight game on Monday, beating Lafayette Jefferson 6-1 at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette.
The Class 4A No. 1 Tigers began their scoring in the third inning with three runs. Joey Brenczewski singled in Zach Cox with the bases loaded, then Jack Brown sent a two-run RBI to center field, scoring Huey Dunn and Carson Dunn.
Huey Dunn batted in a run in the fourth inning, with a right field single to send Curtis Kearschner home. Fishers added two more runs in the sixth inning; Huey Dunn scored on Brenczewski’s RBI groundout and Jack Brown doubled home Carson Dunn.
Brown, Huey Dunn and Carson Dunn all had two hits, while JP Preston hit a fifth-inning double. Gavin Kuzniewski went four and a third innings for the win, striking out eight and allowing only two hits.
The Tigers are 6-1 and begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series Thursday at Noblesville.

Sheridan rode a dominant effort by pitcher Sebastian Salazar to a 3-1 Hoosier Heartland Conference victory at Clinton Prairie on Tuesday.
Salazar went six innings for the Blackhawks and struck out 16 Prairie batters, issuing only two walks and one hit. He would also score a run for Sheridan in the seventh inning as well.
The ‘Hawks were the first team to get on the board, breaking through in the fifth inning. Evan Grinstead was hit by a pitch to lead off, moved to second on a groundout, then scored after Cole Macintosh hit a single. In the seventh inning, Salazar scored to give Sheridan a 2-0 lead. Silas DeVaney then doubled on to base, and quickly scored on a Zach Bales hit to right field.
Macintosh was 2-for-3 at the plate. Dayne Voege pitched the seventh inning and got the save.
The Blackhawks are 1-1 and host Clinton Prairie this afternoon to complete the HHC series.

Noblesville dropped a 4-2 game to Columbus East Tuesday in its home opener at Don Dunker Field.
The Olympians never trailed, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Millers tied the game in the bottom of the second with two runs: Josh Kern scored when Luke Wilson reached on error, then Wilson scored on Drew Niswonger’s RBI fielder’s choice. Columbus East hit a home run in the fourth inning to regain the lead.
Kern finished the game 2-for-3. Ty Haley had five strikeouts.
Noblesville is off until Thursday when it hosts Fishers to start that HCC series.

Guerin Catholic dropped its first game of the season Tuesday, falling to Circle City Conference opponent Covenant Christian 3-1 in a home game.
The Golden Eagles scored their run in the second inning. Davis Wagner got home on Bryson Dorsey’s RBI groundout. The Warriors tied the game in the fourth inning, then scored twice in the seventh to win.
AJ Nunley had two hits for Guerin Catholic. Clay Patton went four innings on the mound, striking out seven.
The Golden Eagles are 2-1 in CCC play and 4-1 overall. Guerin Catholic travels to Covenant Christian this afternoon to complete the conference series.

University, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, dropped a 3-1 game to 4A Harrison 3-1 Tuesday at Grand Park.
The Raiders scored two runs in the fourth inning and another run in the sixth. The Trailblazers scored their run in the seventh inning when Seth Hogg got home on a wild pitch.
Harrison held University to two hits, one each from Sam Woodward and Brady Redman. Grayson Knight threw four innings, striking out nine against just two hits.
The ‘Blazers are 3-2 and play a Pioneer Conference game Thursday at Muncie Burris.

Hamilton Heights lost a tough Hoosier Conference game Tuesday, as 3A No. 6 Western scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Huskies 3-1.
Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning; Kaleb Murry stole home base to get Heights on the board.
Drew VanOeveren had the Huskies’ lone hit. He also pitched seven innings, striking out eight.
Heights is 2-2 overall and plays at Western this afternoon to complete the conference series.
