The Carmel boys swim team cruised to another sectional championship on Saturday, as the Greyhounds hosted the Sectional 9 finals at their aquatic center.
Carmel scored 551 points to win its 15th consecutive title and 35th overall. In addition, the ‘Hounds set themselves up well to continue their state championship streak by qualifying the majority of their swims to the state finals, which start Friday at the IU Natatorium.
Carmel had 22 out of 27 swims qualify for state, either by winning or by making the state cut time in that event. The other five swims were all close enough that they could receive callbacks to state, which means the times are fast enough to fill a field of 32 in an event. Callbacks will be determined on Tuesday as two sectionals in northern Indiana delayed their finals until Monday.
The Greyhounds won all 11 of the swimming events. Aaron Shackell, Ryan Malicki and Gregg Enoch were all three-time winners.
First, Shackell and Malicki teamed with Sean Sullivan and Christopher Holmes to win the medley relay in a state cut time of 1 minute, 29.38 seconds.
Shackell was back in the water right away, and swam to victory in the 200 freestyle. The junior later was the winner in the butterfly event.
Enoch also had a quick turnaround, swimming to a win in the 500 free, then joining Leo Han, Andrew Robertson and Graham Seaver to take first in the 200 free relay. Enoch and Sullivan were also part of the victorious 400 free relay, with Rikito Iwase and Emile Haig.
Meanwhile, Malicki sailed to first place in the individual medley, then easily won the breaststroke event, where sophomore Brandon Malicki placed second. Both swam in state cut times. Rounding out the individual wins were Holmes in the 50 free, Sullivan in the 100 free and Han in the backstroke.
Carmel’s qualifiers by state cut time were: Enoch and Iwase in the 200 free, Michael Gorey and Brandon Malicki in the IM, Han and Holmes in the butterfly, Robertson in the 100 free, Connor Lathrop and Carson Szotek in the 500 free and Gorey in the breaststroke.
RUNNER-UP MILLERS
Noblesville finished second at the sectional, scoring 401 points. The Millers had two swims qualify for state, starting with the medley relay team of Jeremiah Ledwith, Aidan Biddle, Cavan Cameron and Wyatt Wade. Cameron would later become a two-time qualifier, as his breaststroke time of 56.29 seconds was nearly two seconds below the state cut.
Noblesville also had two divers place in the top four, which qualifies them for the Fort Wayne South Side regional on Tuesday. Parker Mutter placed third and Aiden Kless finished fourth.
SIX QUALIFY FOR ‘ROCKS
Westfield took third as a team with a score of 331 points. The Shamrocks also had six swims qualify for state.
Noah Brauer and Evan Lake both were four-time qualifiers. The duo were part of the qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relays, joining Bennett Morse and Aiden Yonkus to finish well under the cut time in both events. Brauer also got state cuts in the IM and butterfly, while Lake swam cut times in the 200 and 500 freestyles.
Guerin Catholic placed sixth as a team, totaling 134 points. Quinn Sweeney had two fifth-place finishes in the 200 free and butterfly, while Drew Wilhite took fifth in the backstroke. Both swimmers joined Sam Miller and Grant Bricking to place fifth in the 200 free relay.

Over at Fishers, the Tigers defended their sectional title, scoring 567 points. It’s the fourth sectional championship for Fishers in program history.
The Tigers won 10 of 12 events at the meet, and had 12 swims qualify for the state prelims. Connor Carlile and Kyle Ponsler were both four-time winners for Fishers.
Carlile swam to victories in the IM and 100 free, while Ponsler finished first in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Both swimmers joined Reed Beaumont and Daniel Bennett to win the 200 free relay, then teamed with Thomas Johanneman and Taichi Kataoka to triumph in the 400 free relay.
Beaumont was a three-time winner, as he began the meet by joining Logan Ayres, Bennett and Keaton Chop to place first in the medley relay. Beaumont also prevailed in the breaststroke, while Ayres won the backstroke. Sebastian Otero led a 1-2 finish in diving, scoring 521.30 points. William Jansen placed second; he and Otero will advance to Tuesday’s diving regional at Fort Wayne South Side.
Beaumont and Bennett also qualified for state by time in the IM, while Jonathan Hines swam a state cut in the 500 free to advance.
Hamilton Southeastern finished second at the sectional with 452 points. Jihoon Jung won the butterfly event, the first of three swims by the Royals to qualify for state. Matthew Truxall qualified in the breaststroke, and both he and Jung teamed with Ryan Harrison and Chouchi Ding to qualify in the medley relay.
Hamilton Heights scored 167 points to place fifth as a team. Nathan Cox finished fourth in diving, advancing him to the Tuesday regional.
