Stars & Stripes wants your photos of veteran memorials

A wonderful opportunity has come our way, and I hope many of you will take part in it.

Stars and Stripes, the newspaper for our military community, is building an interactive map of local veterans memorials across the country – not the big national monuments in Washington or Pearl Harbor, which are already on the map, but the memorials in our own hometowns: the ones only locals know about, that a visitor passing through could easily miss.

They are asking readers to help by sending in a photo they took themselves, along with the exact street address of the memorial and their name. It can honor veterans of one war, or veterans more broadly, from any war. The photo must be your own, and free of any copyright or other restrictions.

If you know of a local memorial – here in Hamilton County or wherever your hometown is – please consider sending your photo and information directly to Gianna Gronowski at Stars and Stripes at Gronowski.Gianna@stripes.com, or WebEditors@stripes.com.

You can read more about the project at this link.

These small, local markers tell a story that the big monuments cannot tell on their own, and every one we help document is a veteran – or a group of veterans – remembered a little more fully. Thank you for considering it, and please feel free to pass this along to anyone else who might have a memorial in mind.
