Noblesville High School will present the cult classic and sci-fi smash musical Little Shop of Horrors at 7 p.m. on Nov. 19, 20, and 21.
The long-running Off-Broadway hit comes home to the NHS auditorium, featuring the man-eating yet beloved plant, Audrey II, and a cast of down-on-their-luck characters finding their way on the streets of Skid Row.
“We have such talented students at NHS, and this show allows us to showcase not just the wonderful cast on stage, but also our students who work more behind the scenes,” said Natali Bacon, director and choreographer of the production and an English teacher at NHS. “Our Tech Theater class has been working very hard on building the giant puppets of Audrey II that we will be using in the show and we are so excited for the community to come see their fantastic work!”
Gaylor Electric is Signature Sponsor of all performances, which take place at NHS Auditorium, 18111 Cumberland Road, with entry at Gate 1. Discount ticket pricing is available through Oct. 31, with $13 for premium reserved seats and $10 for standard reserved seats. Little Shop of Horrors is a delightfully dark musical comedy about love, ambition, and a very unusual plant. Seymour is a shy, struggling employee at Mushnik’s flower shop on Skid Row, secretly in love with his co-worker, Audrey. His luck begins to change when he discovers an extraordinary new plant that quickly attracts attention and seems to offer Seymour everything he’s always dreamed of. There’s just one catch: The plant has an appetite that can’t be satisfied with sunlight and water. As Seymour discovers, keeping the plant alive means feeding it something far more sinister: human blood. With its irresistible blend of doo-wop, Motown-inspired music, outrageous humor, and creature-feature thrills, Little Shop of Horrors is a wickedly entertaining story about how far we’ll go to get what we want.
The show features more than a dozen musical selections, from the theme song, “Little Shop of Horrors” and rock ‘n’ roll “Dentist!” to the high-energy “Feed Me (Git It)” and the iconic and well-known duet, “Suddenly, Seymour.”
NHS Music Director Graham Sutton and Assistant Music Director Claire Rancourt are leading the NHS students, with assistance from Student Assistant Director Ben Baker and Dance Captain Layla Valentine.
The student actors and actresses playing the Little Shop of Horrors main characters are Nash Sizelove as Seymour, Olivia Magill as Audrey, Cutter Bechtle as Mushnik, Gabe Carney as Orin, Graham Bodkin as the voice of Audrey II with puppet manipulation by Corinne Loessl, Mikaela Caddell as Chiffon, Luci Deichman as Crystal, and Lillian Bennett as Ronnette.
Featured characters are played by students Chace Ling, Avery Young, Leo Kenley, Timmy Quinnell, and Paxton Shock. Thirteen students make up the choruses singing and dancing their hearts out on Skid Row: Alexa Bullock, Ellie Fisk, Emma Harden, Ailis Price, Blakely Zebrauskas, London Albee, Breon Anthony, Sophia DeGuire, Carmen Dickison, Leah Durbin, Eva Rubin, Ellie Valentine and Layla Valentine.
Of course, no grand musical production – especially one featuring a giant plant puppet – can happen without the hard work and talent of a student crew. Among the 32 students who make up the dedicated crew are Student Director and Stage Manager Ben Baker, Deck Managers Keegan Bright and River Lin, Props Manager Ryleigh Galema, Costume Manager Amiyah Simmiolkjier, and Hair/Makeup Manager Lydia Fitzgerald.
Also on crew are Darcy Brown, Makynzi Brown, Lillian Campbell, Tania Danciu, Bryden Earle, Gwen Eisert, Emily Greenlee, Lily Hallgarth, Daphney Harvey, Eliza Hinson, Lex Knerr, Nicole Barroeta Manzo, Gavin Owens, Gabriella Paul Bulin, Cameron Pasko, Kai Reeves, Leighton Rugenstein, Sam Marie Sanders, Aria Stephens, Sawyer Smith, Grant Wettrick, and Grace Weaver.
The pit orchestra features students EJ Juan and Rhys Williams.
Little Shop of Horrors’ book and lyrics are by Howard Ashman, music by Alan Menken and based on the film by Roger Corman, screenplay by Charles Griffith. It was originally produced by the WPA Theatre (Kyle Renick, Producing Director) and originally produced at the Orpheum Theatre, New York City by the WPA Theatre, David Geffen, Cameron Mackintosh, and the Shubert Organization. The production is licensed by Music Theatre International.
