Sheridan Community Schools’ (SCS) Agriculture Department, led by Scott Ison and Brett Beckner, is continuing to create opportunities for students.
Each year, there are new opportunities that allow students to explore different careers, pathways, and opportunities that they might have after high school. The most recent was an inside look at manufacturing and being able to grow produce in the laboratory.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, members of Sheridan’s FFA put the new grow laboratory to use. They planted several cool-season vegetables to test the laboratory’s growing conditions and abilities. Several flats have already begun to germinate, and students are able to see that progress every day. This new lab allows students and FFA members to learn about and actually see plant growth, cultivation, and production. Eventually, students hope to be able to sample some of their harvest and see how they can upgrade their process in the future.
On Friday, Oct. 2, students in Sheridan’s Ag Power and Fabrication classes visited EMC for Manufacturing Day. During the visit, students were able to tour the facility, better understand potential careers within the industry, and see how the concepts they study in class connect to the real world. At EMC, students were able to see modern manufacturing practices and how they produce parts that are distributed across the globe.
Both experiences demonstrate Sheridan’s commitment to hands-on learning as well as to the development of career-ready students. The Ag Department is helping students learn practical skills, discover potential new interests, and prepare for the future.
