Demolition to begin on Hazel Dell Parkway bridge

Work marks first step toward replacing flood-damaged structure

Crews will begin demolishing the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge just south of 106th Street next week. The structure was destroyed during August’s historic flooding.

Representatives from Hamilton County, the City of Carmel, Carmel Utilities, Martin Marietta, and Milestone Contractors met on site Thursday for a preconstruction conference to review demolition plans and coordinate the work.

Milestone will begin moving equipment to the site Friday, with demolition scheduled to start Monday, Sept. 28. Crews are expected to work 10-hour days, six days a week, to safely remove the damaged structure. Under the contract, demolition must be completed by Oct. 30.

“This is more than just taking the bridge down,” County Highway Director Brad Davis said. “Crews will also restore the slopes along the banks to make the area more stable and safer. At the same time, we’re working to complete the design of the permanent replacement. Getting the demolition done now will save valuable time once we’re ready to begin construction on the new bridge.”
