Sheridan students get a glimpse at their futures

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Sheridan Middle and High School held its quarterly Future Fair for high school students and eighth graders.

These college and career fairs are held each quarter for students to gain insight into the businesses, schools, and opportunities that await them after high school and beyond. This Future Fair was particularly exciting because it also took place during the school-wide College GO! Week. The week was dedicated to all-things-college as seniors, specifically, started applications and discovered what could be in store for their future.

At this quarter’s Future Fair, students had the opportunity to learn about the various career paths and colleges while interacting with the representatives from the local businesses and organizations. Through the conversations, students were able to form a personal connection and gain real-world insight into the different pathways. These experiences help bridge the gap between high school and post-graduation life while allowing students to better understand what they are capable of.

At the Future Fair, one student was overheard saying, “I hadn’t planned to go to college because my parents have always told me what I’m going to do. But this is really showing me that I have options!”

Jill Cali, the Education Professions and Early College coordinator for SHS, also said, “I love seeing our students interacting with guests at the SHS Future Fairs! Our students are learning that talking about college, technical training, military, or potential careers isn’t scary and is worth their time and effort. I’m also pleased that they’re practicing the really valuable employability skills of effective communication and professionalism when they attend these events.”
