Indiana literacy levels rise statewide & Tipton students are part of the momentum

Indiana’s latest literacy report shows encouraging momentum statewide: every student population has now surpassed its pre-pandemic literacy achievement levels, with 88.7 percent of students demonstrating proficient reading skills on the IREAD assessment, an increase of nearly 1.5 percentage points over last year.

Across the state, 511 elementary schools now have at least 95 percent of students reading proficiently, a number that has more than doubled since 2023. Tipton Elementary School third graders achieved an outstanding 98 percent pass rate on this assessment.

At Tipton Community School Corporation, this progress reflects the work happening every day in the classroom. Tipton’s teachers, instructional teams, and support staff have remained deeply committed to strengthening foundational literacy skills, aligning instruction to the Indiana Literacy Framework, and ensuring students receive the targeted support they need to grow as readers. From early phonics instruction to small-group interventions and family partnerships, literacy continues to be a central focus across the district.
