Former Indiana Senator Jim Merritt to discuss new book on lessons from COVID pandemic

Living Branch Church invites the community to an evening of thoughtful conversation, reflection, and hope as former Indiana Senator Jim Merritt discusses his new book, Lessons Learned: Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic? from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 at Wolfies Grill, 20999 Hague Road, Suite 9015, Noblesville.

This free event will feature remarks from Merritt followed by a discussion with former Noblesville Deputy Mayor and Public Safety Director Chad Knecht, who helped lead the city’s response throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, they will explore the lasting lessons of one of the most challenging periods in recent history, the decisions that shaped Indiana communities, and how those experiences can better prepare everyone for the future.

Rather than revisiting the divisions of the pandemic, the evening is designed to foster meaningful dialogue about resilience, leadership, mental health, community, and hope.

“The lessons of the pandemic extend beyond public policy,” said Bruce Longbottom of Living Branch Church. “They remind us of our need for hope, purpose, and community. Our desire is for this evening to encourage honest conversation about where we’ve been, what we’ve learned, and the hope that enables us to move forward together. Being forewarned is forearmed, but only if we get together for a community conversation on our recent history.”

Merritt served nearly three decades in the Indiana General Assembly and was actively involved in many of the state’s policy discussions during the pandemic. His book examines the decisions made throughout the crisis while encouraging readers to thoughtfully consider how Indiana and the nation can better respond to future public health emergencies.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase copies of Lessons Learned: Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic?, and Merritt will be available following the program to sign books.
