Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) will begin the next phase of improvements to the Kawachinagano Japanese Garden this October, further refining the long-term vision for one of Carmel’s treasured cultural spaces. The project builds on the garden’s recent redesign and reopening this past spring, continuing improvements that enhance the space while preserving its traditional Japanese landscape design.
Made possible with $750,000 in funding from the city, this phase is expected to be completed by spring 2027. The project will expand the Japanese Garden into the area between the existing northern garden and the southern stormwater retention pond.
Designed by internationally renowned Japanese landscape designer Hoichi Kurisu (HK), who also led the garden’s redesign, the project will introduce a new waterfall and extend the garden into previously undeveloped space.
Klitzing
“We are thrilled to continue working with HK to build on his inspiring design,” CCPR Director and CEO Michael Klitzing said. “The expansion will help visually connect the two bodies of water while introducing the calming sounds of flowing water, a common element in Japanese gardens.”
A second construction phase is projected to begin in spring 2027 and will include a loop trail around the pond, benches, prairie, and additional trees. The long-term vision is to transform the southern pond to complement the design of the existing Japanese Garden as additional funding becomes available.
