The Sheridan softball team scored an overwhelming victory to open Sectional 39 at Tipton, beating Taylor 17-2 in a five-inning first-round game.
The Blackhawks scored in every inning in which they batted, starting with three runs in the first. Hayleigh Kemp doubled in Ellie Eaton for the first run, the Amiyah Doss hit a double to send Kemp home. Doss later scored on an error.
Sheridan put up three more runs in the second inning. Remi Smith got home on Doss’ RBI fielder’s choice, Eaton scored on a passed ball and Doss went home after Makenzy Terry reached on an error.
The Hawks loaded the bases in the third inning, then Anna Rusk scored after Doss drew a walk. Adria Jump came up next and blasted a grand slam over the center field fence. Eaton, Kemp and Doss all scored and Sheridan led 11-1. (Taylor scored its runs in the second and fourth innings.)
The Blackhawks kept cruising in the fourth inning, putting up six more runs. Rusk scored after Doss drew a bases-loaded walk, Eaton got home on a passed ball, Jump tripled in Kemp and Doss, then Terry singled Jump home. Sheridan loaded the bases again, and Terry scored after Smith drew a walk.
Kemp had a flawless night, hitting 3-for-3. Eaton hit a double. Jump and Norah Adams both had two hits, with Jump totaling six RBIs. Jump pitched all five innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit.
The Hawks are 6-14 and plays Elwood tonight in the Sectional 39 semifinals.

Guerin Catholic lost in the semifinals of the Lebanon sectional on Tuesday, falling to Danville 5-1.
The Golden Eagles scored their run in the fourth inning, when Jillian Davis led off the inning with a home run. The Warriors held Guerin Catholic to two hits; Kate Brady hit a third-inning single.
Ava Augustinovicz pitched a complete game for the Golden Eagles, who finished their season 6-10.
