Baseball: Carmel wins twice at own Invitational

Carmel swept two games at its own Invitational on Saturday, May 23.

The Greyhounds began with an 8-3 victory over Lawrence North. Mark Neels started the scoring with a two-run dingle in the first inning, bringing in Nate Steele and John Zangrilli.

Carmel added four runs in the second inning. Jeremy Millay scored on an error, then Jackson Harris smacked a two-run double to score Max Walkey and Zangrilli. Adam Fouts got home after a pitcher’s balk and the score was 6-0.

The Hounds completed their scoring in the fifth inning. Harris led off with a home run and Jacob Behm scored after Walkey drew a bases-loaded walk.

Eli Wier pitched five innings for the win, striking out four.

The Greyhounds beat Cathedral 6-2 in their second game. Playing as the away team, Carmel scored three runs in the first inning. Zangrilli got home on an error, Harris singled in Steele and Jackson Treadway scored on a wild pitch.

Zangrilli singled in Millay for a fourth-inning run. Neels blasted a triple in the fifth inning to score Treadway, then was sent home by Behm’s RBI groundout.

Treadway hit a double, both he and Zangrilli had two hits. Luke Bryant pitched 2.1 innings for the win.

The Hounds are 11-14 and play Hamilton Southeastern Wednesday in the first round of the Noblesville sectional.

University lost a 5-2 game at Eastbrook on Saturday, May 23.

The Panthers led 4-0 after three innings. Philip Jacobs singled in Oliver Kingery in the fourth inning for the Trailblazers’ first run, then Cooper Cammack doubled Kingery home in the sixth inning.

Caleb Stocker threw six strikeouts in four innings.

University is 17-10 and plays at Sectional 30 on Saturday, taking on host Park Tudor.

Westfield dropped a 10-0, five-inning game at Crown Point on Saturday, May 23.

The Shamrocks were held to two hits, one single each for Andrew Noble and Maddox Novotney.

Westfield is 15-10-1 and plays Fishers Friday in the semifinals of the Noblesville sectional.

Hamilton Heights was swept by Frankfort in a Saturday, May 23 road doubleheader.

The Huskies lost the first game 13-9. Heights scored a run in the top of the first inning; AJ Flanagan scored on Dillon Pitts’ RBI groundout.

The Hot Dogs put up three runs in the bottom of the first and six runs in the second inning for a 9-1 lead. Heights scored twice in the top of the third inning: Chase Hall singled in Rob Pruitt, then Owen Hughes tripled Hall home.

Frankfort added a run to lead 10-3 after three innings. The Huskies made a comeback in the fourth inning, scoring six runs.

Kaden Lawson batted in Flanagan, then Hall hit a three-run single, scoring Pruitt, Lawson and Brennen Heckman. Hughes doubled in Hall, then was scored by an Austin Kappes single. That brought Heights within 10-9, but Frankfort scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Hall was 3-for-4 at the plate. PJ Wright and Pitts both hit a double.

The Hot Dogs won the second game 13-3 in five innings. The Huskies scored all of their runs in the second inning: Lawson doubled Josh Newton home, then Hall batted in Lawson. Pruitt came in to run for Hall and scored on a Gavin Hite single.

Heights dropped an 11-1, six-inning game at Lafayette Central Catholic on Monday. Hughes doubled in Jackson Mikesell in the second inning. Pitts hit a third-inning double. Lawson pitched 3.2 innings, tossing four strikeouts.

The Huskies are 7-18 and play Delta Thursday at the Jay County sectional.
