Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools recognizes 23 third-grade students who were nominated through a new partnership between the Indiana Department of Education and the nonprofit organization National Math Stars.

The students were recognized during the May 13 Board of School Trustees meeting for scoring within the top 2 percent of third-grade math students in Indiana on the 2025-2026 ILEARN Checkpoints. Their achievement demonstrates exceptional mathematical understanding, academic potential, and a strong foundation for continued success.

All 23 students are currently enrolled in accelerated math instruction through HSE’s high ability services, which provide advanced learning opportunities designed to challenge and support students who demonstrate exceptional achievement or aptitude.

“This recognition is a wonderful example of what can happen when students are challenged, supported and encouraged to grow,” said Erin Mohr, Assistant Director of Elementary Education. “These students have demonstrated outstanding mathematical thinking, and we are proud of the hard work they have put into their learning. It also reflects the strong instruction happening in our classrooms and the importance of building a solid foundation in mathematics beginning in the elementary grades.”

As nominees, students are eligible to apply for National Math Stars’ free long-term support program. The program provides support for advanced math coursework, enrichment opportunities, family advising resources and access to a national network of high-achieving peers.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our students to continue developing their talents beyond the classroom,” Superintendent Dr. Matt Kegley said. “We are grateful for the partnership between the Indiana Department of Education and National Math Stars and proud to celebrate these students for reaching such an impressive academic milestone.”
