Baseball: Rocks fall to Columbus North

Westfield fell behind early and eventually dropped a 5-3 home game to Columbus North on Tuesday.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Beck Jordan was sent home by a Lincoln Hoffman sacrifice fly to get the Shamrocks on the board.

The Bull Dogs scored three runs in the second inning, then added another run in the third. Westfield scored its other two runs in the fourth inning: Jordan singled in Maddox Novotney and Kasen Jessup.

Jordan finished 3-for-4 at the plate; both he and Hoffman hit one triple each. Ben Spencer pitched three innings, striking out five and allowing only two hits. Westfield collected eight hits to Columbus North’s seven.

The Rocks are 11-9-1 and play Thursday at Hamilton Southeastern to begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.

University fell to Park Tudor 17-7 Tuesday in the Pioneer Conference championship game, which the Trailblazers hosted at RoundTripper Academy.

The Panthers led 6-0 before University got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Philip Jacobs scored on a wild pitch, then Beckett Suh singled in Quentin Green.

Park Tudor put up three runs in the top of the fifth for a 9-2 advantage. The Blazers scored two in the bottom of the fifth: Braxton Sparks was sent home by Ethan Cutsinger’s RBI groundout, then Oliver Kingery batted in Green.

The Panthers scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Cooper Cammack led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run, keeping University within 11-5. But Park Tudor scored six runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Trailblazers scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cammack doubled in Hudson Walloch and Kingery.

Kingery, Suh, Cammack and Jacobs all had two hits, with Jacobs hitting a double.

University is 15-6 and plays at Bloomington North this evening.
