Baseball Roundup: Royals stay perfect in HCC

Hamilton Southeastern kept its perfect Hoosier Crossroads Conference record intact on Friday, April 17 with a 1-0 win at Class 4A No. 8 Zionsville.

The 4A No. 10 Royals scored its run in the first inning. Cy Cole hit a sacrifice fly to score Clark Bucher. It was a true pitcher’s duel: Zionsville’s Davis Moore didn’t allow a hit over seven innings, while Southeastern’s Spencer Mohr only gave up three hits in seven innings.

Mohr struck out five and only allowed one walk.

The Royals are 4-0 in conference play and 9-2 overall. Southeastern hosts Avon Wednesday to start another HCC series.

Westfield dropped an HCC game at Brownsburg 7-4 on Friday, April 17.

The Shamrocks led 3-0 after four innings. Andrew Noble scored in the first inning on Lincoln Hoffman’s RBI groundout, then Reid Dikos was sent home by Maddox Novotney’s RBI groundout in the third inning, which Dikos led off with a double.

Evan Govert singled in Kasen Jessup in the fourth inning and Westfield led 3-0. But the Bulldogs came back in the fifth inning, scoring five runs for a 5-3 lead. Gavin Russ got a run back with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth cemented the win for Brownsburg.

Noble hit a double as one of five hits for the Rocks.

Westfield came back to get a walkoff win over Carmel 4-3 in an eight-inning Monday game.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Adam Fouts scored for the Greyhounds when Jackson Treadway reached on error, then Novotney tied the game on Hoffman’s sacrifice fly.

The Shamrocks’ Collin Kern hit another sacrifice fly in the second inning, sending Russ home for a 2-1 Westfield lead. Novotney singled in a fourth-inning run, scoring Gabe Garcia and making the lead 3-1.

Carmel tied the game in the fifth inning. Jacob Behm doubled in John Zangrilli, then Max Walkey scored on a fielder’s choice from Kane Hare. The scored stayed 3-3 until the eighth inning, when Kern singled in Garcia for the winning run.

Novotney and Kern both had two hits for the Shamrocks. James Kovacs pitched 2.2 innings for the win, striking out four.

Jackson Harris also hit a double for Carmel. Luke Bryant pitched 3.1 innings, striking out five.

Westfield is 6-4-1 and plays an HCC game at Fishers on Thursday.

Carmel split two games with Louisville Trinity on Saturday, April 18 at Hartman Field.

The Greyhounds won the first game 11-1 in six innings. Harris was 3-for-4 at the plate, with Treadway hitting a triple and Behm hitting a double. Behm drove in three runs and scored two for the game.

Calloway Carmichael pitched all six innings, tossing five strikeouts against one hit.

Carmel dropped the second game 5-1, scoring its run in the sixth inning. Charles Ranek tripled in Jeremy Millay.

Ranek and Millay both had one hit. Eli Wier threw 11 strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

The Hounds are 3-6 and host Zionsville on Wednesday.
