The 2026 Specialty Excellence Report by Healthgrades is out, and OrthoIndy, a leading orthopedic practice specializing in bone, joint, spine and muscle care, has announced that OrthoIndy Hospital has been rated five stars for five services. These include inpatient and outpatient total knee replacement, inpatient and outpatient total hip replacement, and spinal fusion surgery.
For the 2026 report, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better-than-expected performance (five stars) to those with statistically worse-than-expected performance (one star) and found that from 2022 to 2024, patients undergoing total knee replacement in hospitals with five stars had, on average, an 80.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication during their hospital stay compared to patients treated at one-star hospitals. For total hip replacement, five-star hospitals averaged a 79.9 percent lower risk, and for spinal fusion surgery, a 54 percent lower risk, on average.*
“When patients come to OrthoIndy, they’re trusting us with something deeply personal – their mobility and quality of life,” OrthoIndy President Dr. Matthew Lavery said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see that trust reflected in these results. The 2026 Specialty Excellence Report reaffirms that our team is delivering the safe, effective care our patients expect and deserve, and we’re honored to help them get back to the activities they enjoy.”
While each of these five-star ratings represents a year over year achievement, one milestone stands out: 19 consecutive years as a five-star recipient for inpatient total knee replacement (2008 to 2026).
“Maintaining a five-star result for nearly two decades is a remarkable testament to our team’s consistency and dedication,” Lavery said. “Our top priority is to raise the standard of orthopedic care for every patient, every day. These results confirm that our commitment to caring for patients safely, skillfully and compassionately continues to make a real difference in our community.”
Beyond this year’s five-star ratings, OrthoIndy Hospital received top honors in two outpatient specialties for the third consecutive year (2024 to 2026). The hospital was named among America’s 50 Best Hospitals for both Outpatient Joint Replacement and Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Excellence. In addition, the hospital earned three Specialty Excellence Awards for Inpatient and Outpatient Joint Replacement and Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 5 percent of hospitals for these services.
These achievements are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. Each year, Healthgrades evaluates risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top hospitals in key specialty areas.
“Healthgrades’ specialty awards help consumers find high quality care tailored to their specific needs,” said Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize OrthoIndy Hospital for its consistently superior outcomes in key service areas, including total joint replacement and orthopedic surgery.”
