Westfield traveled to Avon Friday, Oct. 3 and came home with a 38-21 Hoosier Crossroads Conference victory.

The Shamrocks were given a test by the Orioles early, but pulled away as the game went on. Cooper Melvin threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Caiden Snow midway through the first quarter to get Westfield on the board. Diego Herrera followed the touchdown with the first of his five extra-point kicks.

Avon tied the game with a 72-yard touchdown run, but the Rocks recovered and took the lead again after Deacon King punched the ball in from the one-yard line. Westfield led 14-7 after the first quarter.

Herrera kicked a 35-yard field goal for the first points of the second period. After they absorbed an Avon touchdown pass, the Shamrocks scored again, with Melvin taking the ball in from the one. That gave Westfield a 24-14 halftime lead.

Aiden Grabowski stepped up in the third quarter, cruising 63 yards for a touchdown. The Orioles threw another TD pass in the fourth quarter, but Grabowski answered with a three-yard TD run to finish the game.

Melvin had a solid game, completing 11 of 19 pass attempts for 135 yards. Snow and Broc Parker each made four catches. Wade Washo led the tackles with nine total, while Alex Aramboles made one sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss.

The Rocks are 4-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall. Westfield hosts Fishers this Friday; the Tigers are also 4-1 in HCC play; both teams are tied for second place in the league standings.
