Basketball fans from across Indiana were buzzing around Carmel and Westfield this past weekend as the sixth annual IBCA/IHSAA boys’ Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes drew teams from all across the state.
The games began last Friday with four Hamilton County teams in action. Noblesville played its first game at Carmel High School, beating Gary 21st Century 64-44 at Bill Shepherd Court. The Millers then made a short trip to Westfield High School’s CSI Gymnasium, taking care of Penn 63-45. Justin Curry led Noblesville in both games, scoring 30 points against Gary 21st Century and 31 points against Penn.
Guerin Catholic spent the day in Westfield and split its games. The Golden Eagles lost to Penn 45-32 in their first game, which was played at CSI Gymnasium. Guerin Catholic then moved to Westfield Middle School, where it beat Warren Central in a close contest, 53-52.
Hamilton Heights played two games at Carmel Fieldhouse. The Huskies fell to Jasper 47-32 in their first game, then dropped a close game to Hanover Central 45-43.
Sheridan played its first game at Carmel Fieldhouse, falling to Heritage Christian 82-53. The Blackhawks then traveled east to Aletto Sports Center, where they lost to Eastern Hancock 63-47.
Saturday games
Carmel played two games on Bill Shepherd Court last Saturday and won them both. The Greyhounds took care of South Bend St. Joseph 65-52, then defeated Columbus East 67-57.
Fishers also saw action, with two victories on Bill Shepherd Court. The Tigers, last season’s Class 4A state runner-up, held off Crown Point 78-73, then cruised past South Bend St. Joseph 67-52.
Guerin Catholic split its Saturday games. The Golden Eagles fell to Ben Davis 56-40 at the Westfield High School Fieldhouse, then beat Fort Wayne South Side 65-43 at Carmel’s Fieldhouse.
Hamilton Heights played its first game at Aletto Sports Center in Carmel, falling to Terre Haute South 67-60. The Huskies returned to Carmel High School and beat Garrett 52-40.
Hamilton Southeastern had two easy wins at Carmel High School. The Royals beat Crispus Attucks 68-51 and Gary West Side 71-49.
Noblesville’s first Saturday game was played on Bill Shepherd Court and the Millers cruised past Silver Creek 58-40. Noblesville took on Class 4A state champion New Albany at Westfield’s CSI Gymnasium and fell in a close game 77-73.
Sheridan played Manchester at Aletto Sports Center for its first game, falling 54-49 in a close contest. The Blackhawks dropped their second game to Austin, 59-53 at Carmel Fieldhouse.
University, last year’s 2A state runner-up, took on Roncalli at Westfield Fieldhouse in its first game and fell 72-65. The Trailblazers took on Corydon Central at CSI Gymnasium and won easily, 78-63.
Westfield played both of its games at CSI Gymnasium. The Shamrocks fell to Parke Heritage 56-42 before beating Fort Wayne Snider 68-64.
