Dear Editor:

Every legislative session is a chance for lawmakers to take action against animal cruelty, and every election empowers us, the voters, to send humane allies back to Indianapolis.

With the 2025 session adjourned, I am proud to report that State Representative Hunter Smith took action for Indiana’s companion animals.

This year, Representative Smith voted in favor of Sunny’s Bill (HB 1458). On average, more than 58,000 dogs are used for research and testing across the United States, including in Indiana. These animals endure unbelievable pain before being cruelly discarded. Sunny’s Bill would give these animals a second lease on life by requiring Indiana laboratories to work with animal shelters and rescues to help these dogs and cats find loving homes.

Representative Smith’s support of Sunny’s Bill this past session speaks to his dedication to Hoosiers and the animals we welcome into our hearts and homes. I urge you to continue electing Representative Hunter Smith and other compassionate lawmakers so that we can continue our fight to make Indiana a better place for people and their animals alike.
