Boys volleyball: Golden Eagles reach semifinals

The REPORTER

The semifinals are set at the Fishers boys volleyball sectional.

Guerin Catholic earned one of those semifinal spots by winning a tough quarterfinal match over Noblesville on Thursday. The Golden Eagles triumphed in five sets, 25-16, 23-25, 24-26, 25-14, 15-12.

Guerin Catholic never trailed in the fifth set, breaking out of a close early part of the set to lead 6-2. Gavin Cradick hit a kill to start the set, then AJ Bauer’s kill put GC up 7-3; he had three kills in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles led 10-5 before the Millers battled back to within 12-10. Gael Esqueda and Sam Wolf both hit kills. Noblesville cut the lead to 13-12 before Adam Jurewicz hit a kill, then Guerin Catholic got the final point to clinch the match.

“I think we made some good changes going into that fourth,” said Golden Eagles coach Ryan Kelley. “I think we had shown in that first how we can really play at a very elite level.”

After the Millers won the second and third sets, Kelley said “the boys came out fired up in that fourth again, and that carried us all the way through, luckily.”

Guerin Catholic is 8-19, while Noblesville finished its season 10-22. The Golden Eagles play Peru (a winner over Kokomo) in Saturday morning’s second semifinal, following the first match between Westfield and Fishers.
