University’s girls went on the road Tuesday night and dropped a 64-56 contest at Western.
The Trailblazers threatened to pull away in both the second and third quarters, but the Panthers rallied back on each occasion.
Western led 10-7 after the first quarter, but University went on a 12-2 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 19-12 lead. Western scored seven points in 55 seconds to knot the score at 19 but University held a 25-21 halftime lead after Leah Norvell canned a buzzer-beater.
Taylor Seay scored five points in the first 16 seconds of the third quarter to give University a 30-21 lead. After a Panther bucket Gabby Culp scored at the Blazers led 32-23 one minute into third quarter. But Western scored the next nine points to tie the game just two minutes later. University pushed back to take a 45-38 lead with one minute left in the third quarter on a Meg Rohloff basket but Western closed to 46-42 at the end of the third.
The teams went back and forth in the final quarter with University taking a 55-54 lead on Anyah Turley’s three pointer from the left corner with 3:34 left. Western outscored the Trailblazers 10-1 the rest of the way to avenge a 53-38 loss to University on Dec. 27.
Seay led University with 17 points. Turley had 15 and Sydney Culp chipped in 12.
The loss dropped University’s record to 7-8. The Trailblazers host 2A No. 12 Sheridan tonight in an All-County matchup at The U Center. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Western won their third game in a row and is now 5-11.
