Barbara Jean “Puncky” McElroy

June 27, 1941 – October 22, 2024

Barbara Jean “Puncky” McElroy, 83, Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 22, 2024, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. Born June 27, 1941, in Lebanon, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Elza Ernest and Maxine Marie (Hayworth) Mossburg.

She was a 1959 graduate of Sheridan High School and a lifetime member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary with the K.V. Elliott American Legion Post 67 in Sheridan.

Barb was the very definition of a workaholic. She was so full of energy you’d get tired just watching her. During the week, she worked in the elementary school cafeteria for Sheridan Community Schools. There was never a dull moment during those 41 years. Between the kids, the staff, and the other ladies in the kitchen, you never knew what you were going to walk into that day, but Barb was going to make it fun. On weekends, she cooked and tended bar at the Sheridan Legion. Barb could handle whatever came her way and serve it right back. She truly loved every minute she got to spend with her Legion family.

Barb tried to stay busy, but not so busy that she missed out on the fun stuff. She enjoyed music and loved to sing (to her, the 50s and 60s were the best); however, her favorite activities were those that involved her friends and family. She loved going camping and having friends over to the house. If an activity involved sitting around a campfire, so much the better.

Barb loved her family dearly. She was a fun-loving mom and grandmother, and the best partner in crime anybody could have ever asked for. She took on the world at 100 miles an hour and made sure that everyone along for the ride left with a good story to tell.

Barb is survived by her husband, David Wayne McElroy. She and Dave were married on July 31, 2004. Also surviving are her two sons, Greg Gary (Ronda) of Cicero and Michael Gary (Fawn) of Muncie; brother, Kenneth E. Mossburg of Kokomo; and by her sister, Caroline J. Goodnight of Sheridan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elza Ernest and Maxine Marie (Hayworth) Mossburg; stepson, Timothy McElroy; nephew, William Dee Goodnight; brother-in-law, Lowell Goodnight; and her feline furbaby, Missy.

Services will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Pastor Jody Brown will be officiating.

Memorial contributions may be presented to either the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Ladies’ Auxiliary for the K.V. Elliott American Legion Post 67 of Sheridan.
