Baseball: Guerin Catholic sweeps doubleheader, Greyhounds see mixed success at Bloomington North tournament

Guerin Catholic swept a doubleheader at Greenfield-Central last Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won the first game 7-3, pulling away with five runs in the seventh inning. Guerin Catholic scored its first two runs in the third inning, with Nolan Ratcliff and Cuinn Morrow getting home after Davis Wagner reached on error.

The Cougars scored two in the bottom of the third inning to lead 3-2, but GC hit its way out of trouble in the seventh. Ian Taylor hit a triple, then scored when Bryson Dorsey cracked a double into right field. Wagner then hit a home run, scoring Dorsey and himself. Tate Troxell drew a walk, then went home when Grant Beard smacked a homer into right field.

Taylor was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Karson Smith hit a double. Morrow threw five strikeouts in five innings.

The Golden Eagles won the second game 7-1. Guerin Catholic put up four runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back two-run singles. Morrow’s center field hit brought in Wagner and Smith, then Ratcliff also hit into center field to score AJ Nunley and Morrow.

Ratcliff led off the seventh inning with a double and later got home on a wild pitch. Troxell then batted in Taylor, and Aiden Ochall followed that with a single to score Troxell.

Morrow, Ratcliff and Troxell all had two hits. Finn Holden got the pitching win.

The Golden Eagles are 18-4 and play Wednesday at Lafayette Jefferson before hosting Greenwood Christian Academy on Thursday.

Carmel split two games at the Bloomington North Tournament last Saturday.

The Greyhounds first beat Evansville North 13-2 in five innings. JD Stein counted two home runs in his 4-for-4 night at the plate, he totaled four runs scored and three batted in. Hunter Snow also hit a home run, finishing with three RBIs. John Zangrilli batted in four runs total, hitting a triple. Silas Neal hit a double. Max Winders went three innings for the win, striking out four.

Carmel dropped its second game 12-9 to Mount Vernon. Stein hit a two-run homer in the second inning; he finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Theo Nagy threw four strikeouts in four innings.

The Greyhounds are 12-10 and welcome Kokomo Thursday and Peru on Friday, then host their Carmel Invitational on Saturday.
