Softball: Heights holds off Rensselaer Central, Carmel & GC fall

The Hamilton Heights softball team held off host Rensselaer Central 5-4 Friday in the third-place game of the Hoosier Conference playoffs.

The Huskies’ Hannah Dent batted in Addie Doak for the game’s first run in the top of the first inning. The Bombers scored two in the bottom of the first, but Heights tied the game in the top of the second; Kamryn Rhoton scored on Heather Crays’ RBI groundout.

The Huskies added two runs in the third inning. Melanee Forrester got home on Dent’s right field hit, then Dent scored when Kassidy Schakel drew a bases-loaded walk. Taya Trosper scored in the fourth inning after a Doak bunt single. The score stayed 5-2 until the seventh inning when Rensselaer scored two runs, but Heights got the third out with a play at third base.

Doak and Dent each had two hits, including a double for Doak. Lily Cash pitched a complete game, striking out seven.

The Huskies are 16-7 and play at the Greenfield-Central tournament today. Heights takes on Frankton at 11 a.m., then plays another game at 3 p.m.

Carmel fell to Terre Haute North 11-10 in a Friday away game.

The Patriots scored first, getting two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Greyhounds put up three runs in the top of the third: Katherine Warren scored on Ellie Goddard’s RBI groundout, then Mia Fleming brought in the go-ahead runs with a single to score Alex Longstreth and Jayden Kleiner.

Terre Haute North tied the game with a third inning RBI double, then went up 5-3 in the fourth inning. Carmel tied things up in the top of the fifth when Kleiner smacked a two-RBI single to score Longstreth and Goddard, who got on base with a double.

The Patriots jumped ahead 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hounds blasted back with five runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-8 advantage. Longstreth batted in Katherine Smtih, then Kleiner sent a two-run hit into left field, bringing Longstreth and Goddard home. Fleming singled in Kleiner, then Sophie Patterson scored on a wild pitch.

But Terre Haute North scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then held Carmel off in the top of the seventh. Kleiner totaled four RBIs, while Longstreth and Fleming each had three hits.

The Greyhounds are 8-16 and play two games at Cherry Tree Softball Complex today. Carmel hosts Crown Point at 11 a.m. and Munster at 1 p.m.

Guerin Catholic fell to Western Boone 13-1 in five innings Friday.

The Golden Eagles scored their run in the fifth inning. Rilee Kluesner hit a double to get on base and was singled home by Madi Cain. Lucy Kemp hit a second inning triple.

Guerin Catholic is 1-12 and plays Monday at North Central.
