Baseball roundup: Fishers sweeps Avon, Westfield splits doubleheader

The Fishers baseball team completed a Hoosier Crossroads Conference sweep of Avon Thursday, beating the Orioles 4-1 at the Tigers’ field.

Avon scored a run in the top of the third inning, but Fishers scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third. Caulin Brown led off the inning with a double, then Owen Lukac came in to run for him. Mayo Fernandez doubled Lukac home to tie the game, moved to third base on an error, then scored on Deagan Repp’s sacrifice bunt.

Noah McPeek batted in the Tigers’ other two runs, with a center field hit to score Huston Dunn, Evan Gardner.

Brown finished the game with two hits. Gavin Kuzniewski pitched a complete game, striking out 12 while allowing four hits and no walks.

Fishers is 7-3 in conference play and 15-7 overall. The Tigers play tonight at New Palestine.

Westfield split an HCC doubleheader with Zionsville Thursday at the Shamrocks’ field.

In the first game, Westfield blasted Zionsville 11-1 in six innings. The contest was scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Shamrocks erupted for five runs. The Eagles scored their run in the top of the sixth, but the Rocks put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The game ended when Drew Law drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Beck Jordan.

Brayden Hibler had two hits, a single and a double. Five Rocks players scored two runs: Nick Fero, Law, Hibler, Matt Drozlek and Logan Hoffman. Ty Anderson got the win, pitching five and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts.

Westfield dropped the second game to Zionsville 7-1. The Shamrocks scored their run in the sixth inning when Fero got home on a wild pitch. He had Westfield’s lone hit.

Owen Swinford pitched four innings for the Rocks, striking out five.

Westfield is 5-5 in the conference and 10-9 overall. The Shamrocks play Monday at Greenwood Christian Academy.

Carmel dropped a 3-1 game to Class 4A No. 3 McCutcheon on the road Thursday.

The 4A No. 8 Greyhounds scored their run in the first inning; JD Stein got home on Hunter Snow’s sacrifice fly. Max Winders pitched all six innings, striking out eight.

Carmel is 10-7 and is off until Friday, May 10 when it plays at Roncalli.

University dropped a 7-2 game to Cathedral Thursday at RoundTripper Academy.

The Irish were in control early, scoring four runs in the first inning. As for the Trailblazers, Cooper Cammack hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Mark Hamby led off the seventh inning with a triple, then scored on Cammack’s RBI groundout.

Ryan Castetter went six innings, striking out four.

The Blazers are 9-9-1 and play Monday at Muncie Burris.

Hamilton Heights fell to Lapel 6-1 on Thursday.

The Huskies scored their run in the seventh inning when Kyle Michael singled in Cohen Boyd. Michael finished with two hits. Dillon Pitts struck out five in three innings.

Heights is 9-8 and hosts Western Boone tonight.
