Softball roundup: Huskies get big road win at Anderson, Royals main conference perfection by beating Zionsville

The Hamilton Heights softball team sailed to a road 14-7 road win at Anderson Wednesday.

The Huskies scored at least two runs in the first five innings. Addie Doak opened the game with a double and eventually scored when Heather Crays reached on error. Crays got home on Kamryn Rhoton’s RBI groundout.

Heights scored four runs in the second inning. Doak singled in Isabel Morrow, Hannah Dent’s right field hit brought in Doak and Mariyah Sexton, and Crays got home on a passed ball to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead.

Heights put up three runs in the third inning. Taya Trosper got home on Morrow’s right field hit, Morrow scored after Morgan Ottinger’s RBI groundout and Doak got home after Lily Cash reached on error.

In the fourth inning, Dent scored on a wild pitch, then Rhoton got home on a passed ball to make the score 11-1. The Indians made a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs to cut the Huskies’ lead to 11-7.

But Heights kept its offense rolling in the fifth inning with two runs. Sexton doubled Doak home, then Cash scored on Hazel Lynch’s RBI groundout. Doak got one more run in the seventh inning when Dent sent her home with a sacrifice fly.

Doak totaled five runs and was 3-for-3 at the plate. Dent drove in three runs on two hits. Crays pitched three innings, striking out five.

The Huskies are 10-5 and play this afternoon at Lebanon.

Hamilton Southeastern kept its unbeaten Hoosier Crossroads Conference season going on Wednesday with a 3-2 win at Zionsville.

The Royals scored two runs in the first inning. Lani Wyrick got home when Addy Justice reached on error, then Justice scored on Reese Garland’s center field hit. The Eagles tied the game in the sixth inning with an RBI triple, followed by an RBI double. But a two-out RBI single by Justice sent Chloe Smith home for the winning run.

Wyrick and Justice both had two hits, including a double for Wyrick. Keira Lodes pitched three innings for the win, striking out five.

Southeastern is 4-0 in the conference and 14-3 overall. The Royals host Brownsburg on Friday to continue HCC play.

Carmel fell to Cathedral 8-4 in a Wednesday away game.

The Greyhounds scored a run in the first inning: Jayden Kleiner got on base with a double and scored when Mia Fleming reached on error.

The Irish put up three runs in the bottom of the third, but Carmel tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Winni Owens scored when Ellie Goddard drew a bases-loaded walk, then Katherine Smith got home on Kleiner’s sacrifice fly.

Cathedral scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the lead from there. Alex Longstreth got a sixth inning run on Goddard’s sacrifice fly.

Owens was 3-for-4 at the plate, with Kleiner getting two hits. Longstreth hit a double.

The Greyhounds are 6-14 and play Friday at Mooresville.

Guerin Catholic dropped a 19-7 Circle City Conference game to Covenant Christian on Wednesday.

Kate Brady, Madi Cain and Natalie Eiler all had two hits for the Golden Eagles, with Brady hitting a double. Emily Powers drove in two runs.

Guerin Catholic is 1-10 and hosts Zionsville on Saturday.

Sheridan fell to Carroll 19-1 Wednesday in a five-inning, away Hoosier Heartland Conference game.

Shelby Eaton scored the Blackhawks’ run on a passed ball in the second inning. Abby Dallas, Maelei Casler and Abbi Merritt all had one hit.

Sheridan is 2-12 and hosts Alexandria on Friday.
